We want some chickens.  We’re thinking of getting ex-battery ones.  We also want a veg patch.  We also don’t have acres of land.  I’m making a wild guess here but I suppose there are other people who want to grow veg and also have chickens…?  How do you protect your veg from the hens?

Also, I’d really like to read a bit more about day-to-day life when it includes hens and I know some HE bloggers have chickens but can’t remember who…can someone point me in the right direction?  Thanks Smile

We had one fenced in areas for the chickens and a separate fenced area for veggies. We raised chickens for 5 years, but the kids got a good offer at the last county fair and sold out. They were tired of the chores, especially in the winter!

Hiya, just got your comment on my site, for some reason it didn’t go to email?
Anyway, yes we do have freecycle, ( will reply whilst I’m here.lol) but I always feel quite embarrassed to post a wanted! my mil has bought us a vacuum.)))))))))

Chickens: I joined a yahoo group where they are really, really helpful. If you look at the animal liberation category on my blog it will be there somewhere, oh, actually just use the search bit for ‘chickens’. Sorry I’m being lazy! and the group link should be there.

We have veg and a rabbit who keeps eating stuff, and need to build him a big pen place. If my dh ever gets round to building it we will get some ex batts too. They can live hapily with rabbits. Yuo need to have veg sectioned off well though, as they will eat everything. We are hoping to build down the side of our town garden, all the way to give them lots of space to roam, then will let them out whilst we are home. Foxes can be big prob even in town too.
    hth.

Can’t remeber where I found the details, but will prob link to the home ed mum where I found out about ex batts in my post.

phew, long. gotta go think about tea!

I used to have chickens but no veg. Now I have veg but no chickens. The two will not mix very well without good fences inbetween them, i.e. the chickens WILL dig up/eat all your growing produce. A 4-5′ fence will *probably* keep them in (it does for most of my friends who have them) but ours got the hang of flying out, even with clipped wings, so I am not getting any more chickens until I can get 6′ fences round their area.

There’s an ex blogringer who had chickens (until the fox got them) and has much veg, having been in her garden, this was achieved by keeping the chickens in a pen. The other type of run that ppl have is an eglu I think.

    Hi Clare,

I want veg and chickens too, so thank you for asking this question and thank you to your commenters for the links!

Dh has borrowed a couple of chicken-keeping books which I haven’t had a chance to look at yet, but you are welcome to look them at tomorrow. (I’ll email directions when I’ve finished catching up on your blog posts!)

We had hens and let them run free range (which you probably don’t have the room to do). The only damage I can remember them doing is eating the carrot tops and hollowing out potatoes. Other than that, they were great for pest control.
